The University of Los Angeles or UCLA is a public research University situated in the Westwood part of Los Angeles. The University was established in 1919, and is looked upon as one of the flagship institutions of the University of California System.UCLA offers in excess of 3 hundred undergraduate and graduate degree programs in wide range of subjects. There are approximately 26,000 undergraduate and 11,000 graduate students studying at the institution. UCLA is positioned 32nd by the U.S.News and World Report’s World’s Ideal Universities. Newsweek’s annual ranking of the Top 100 Global universities, ranked UCLA 12th. The 2010 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) ranked UCLA thirteenth.In 2007, UCLA was ranked thirteenth on the globe (11th in North America) by Top 500 World Universities, an annual list published by the Institute of Higher Education at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China. Global Universities Ranking lists UCLA as 15th in the world. UCLA is ranked 33rd in Financial Times’ Global MBA Rankings in 2010. Human Resources & Labor Review, a national human competitiveness index & analysis, ranked the university 14th in 2010 internationally as one of 50 Ideal World Universities. The Times Higher Education World University Rankings declared UCLA ranked 11th, in 2010. The QS World University Ranking in 2011 had UCLA ranked 34th, one position higher than the year previous.
Many of the USC Graduate school programs have an extremely good reputation. The Anderson School of Management and the David Geffen School of Medicine consistently position among the top 10 in the United States. UCLA’s oldest operating unit, the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies (GSEIS), was positioned 2nd among American graduate schools of education in the 2006 edition of U.S. News and World Report, America’s Ideal Graduate Schools. The UCLA School of Law is also very much regarded, and is the youngest law school in the country to continually rank in the top 15 nationally. Also, UCLA Law was titled among the Princeton Review’s “10 Hardest Law Schools To Get Into” in 2009. And additionally, in 2009, the UCLA School of Theater, Film, and TV was ranked third nationally by US News and World Reports, and the School of Architecture put 2nd in the country according to The Key Centre for Architectural Sociology.
Los Angeles itself, is considered the most populated city in California. The city was founded in 1781, and became part of Mexico in 1821, following the Mexican War of Independence. Los Angeles and the rest of California were bought as part of the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, at the end of the war, and became part of the USA. Often nicknamed the ‘City of Angels’, LA is a global center of business, international trade, entertainment, fashion, technology, to study but a few! Los Angeles continues to be ranked third richest city and 5th most powerful and influencial city in the world. As everyone knows, Los Angeles is home to Hollywood and is the “Entertainment Capital of the World”.
Los Angeles enjoys plenty of sunshine month in month out, and has a mediterranean climate. Due to its location on the ‘Pacific Ring of Fire’, Los Angeles is subject to earthquakes. This geological instablity has produced numerous faults, one of the major ones being the San Andeas fault. Many major earthquakes have hit the city..
It is certain that there are numerous things which might attract graduate students to the city of Los Angeles and to UCLA. The commerical importance of the city, the total number of things you can do in LA, the warm weather and the excellent reputation of UCLA, are possibly some of them. Deciding on a graduate school is a very important decision, and there are numerous other factors, other than location to consider. It is very wise to research any college you might very well be considering with great care. The range of study courses acquirable and financial factors are also extremely important to consider.
